Do not stop or change prescribed medication

Never stop, reduce or change any medication your doctor has prescribed without speaking to them first. This applies to acid-suppressing medication such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 blockers.

Stopping acid-suppressing medication abruptly or without supervision can cause rebound symptoms and, in some people, can mask or delay diagnosis of a more serious condition.

Symptoms that need medical attention

Reflux symptoms can overlap with symptoms of more serious conditions. Do not self-treat with a supplement — see your GP promptly if you experience any of the following:

difficulty swallowing, or food sticking when you swallow
pain when swallowing
unexplained weight loss
a hoarse voice or voice changes that persist
coughing up blood, or vomiting blood
black or tarry stools
a lump or swelling in your neck
persistent or worsening symptoms, or symptoms that are new if you are over 40
symptoms that do not improve with over-the-counter treatment

If you have chest pain, pressure or tightness, pain spreading to your arm, jaw, neck or back, breathlessness, or you feel faint or sweaty, call 999 (UK) or 911 (US) immediately. Heart attack symptoms can feel like indigestion or reflux. Do not assume it is reflux.
